Karla Lems is a steadfast public servant and small business owner running for Lieutenant Governor of South Dakota in 2026, alongside gubernatorial candidate Jon Hansen.
A dedicated Republican, she has served as State Representative for District 16 since January 2023, representing Lincoln, Turner, and Union counties, and has been Speaker pro tempore of the House since 2025. Her leadership emphasizes conservative principles, individual liberties, and economic opportunity.
Born and raised in South Dakota, Karla’s deep-rooted faith and love for her community fuel her public service. Married to her husband, Gaylon, for 36 years, she is a proud mother to Laura, Jay, & Kalyn, mother-in-law to Jake and Hannah, and Nana to four.” Her experience and background in farming, property management, and small business ownership equips her with a grounded understanding of South Dakotans’ needs.
Karla’s political journey began at the grassroots level, including roles on the Lincoln County Republicans board and volunteer work with the South Dakota Family Policy Council. Known for her firm stance on protecting freedoms and advocating for responsible, family-centered governance.
