“South Dakota’s landowners are under attack, and I refuse to let politicians in Washington trample our rights,” said Speaker Jon Hansen. “This provision is a blatant power grab that undermines our state’s laws and endangers our communities. We will continue to lead the critical fight to protect South Dakota farmers, ranchers, and landowners from any government and big corporate infringements on our rights.”
Hansen’s alarm, first raised through a detailed post on X, exposed the proposal’s language that blocks state and local oversight of pipeline routes. His efforts have galvanized conservative opposition, with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis amplifying the issue to a national audience.
“This represents overriding both the rights of states and private property owners to serve Biden’s Green New Deal,” DeSantis posted on X, echoing Hansen’s concerns. “What the heck is going on up there?”
South Dakota Representative Karla Lems, a steadfast ally and candidate for Lieutenant Governor, praised Hansen’s leadership. “Speaker Hansen’s courage in shining a light on this federal overreach is exactly why South Dakota needs him,” Lems said. “He’s fighting for our landowners and our state’s right to govern itself.”
The provision has reignited tensions over carbon pipelines, which threaten to encroach on private land and raise safety concerns. Hansen’s post included evidence of past abuses, such as a 2023 incident where a carbon pipeline company with armed patrol intruded on property without the landowner’s consent, highlighting the stakes for local families.
